Melissa McCarthy says 'The Little Mermaid' Ursula performance was '100 percent' inspired by drag queens

In her role as the tentacled sea witch Ursula in the upcoming live-action "The Little Mermaid," which is set to open in theaters this Memorial Day weekend, Melissa McCarthy stated that drag queens had a "100 percent" influence on her.

McCarthy recently spoke with her costar Halle Bailey and the film's director, Rob Marshall, about the upcoming movie with Entertainment Weekly. There, she talked briefly about her past with drag performances and how her role as the notorious villainess was influenced by her role as a drag queen.

"I'm a drag queen inside and out. In a recent interview, she told the publication, "I'm always right on the verge of going full-time with her."

Ursula, the flamboyant, white-haired, purple-skinned sea witch whose exaggerated makeup has been a long-standing trademark since she hit the big screen in animated form over 30 years ago, was praised as "everything I want in a drag queen" by her. She pointed to Ursula's "sadness" and "edginess" that work in harmony with humor to create the character.
